Trump's illegal actions against international students must stop.
Friend –
Over the last few weeks, the Trump administration has taken extreme measures to remove the immigrant-student status of international students studying at universities across the country by removing them from the DHS SEVIS system, putting their educations at risk, and threatening their complete removal from the United States.
Since the end of March, at least 4,700 college students nationwide – including dozens in Wisconsin – have had their statuses abruptly terminated without explanation or due process.
The recent wave of terminations we've seen in Wisconsin is unwarranted, unlawful, and devastating for impacted students. That's why we filed an amicus brief in two cases challenging their legality yesterday. Even after the federal DOJ admitted defeat on Friday, indicating that DHS would be rolling back those illegal policies, we know that their word is not enough and that this administration could change its mind again at any time. That's why we've asked the Court to continue its work and grant an injunction that will give students long-term protection against these illegal actions by DHS.
The students involved have all been issued visas granting them legal residency in the United States, and they have paid tens of thousands of dollars to attend school. Yet, seemingly out of nowhere, the federal government has pulled the rug out from under them, stripping them of their lawful status without providing prior notice, a clear justification, or a hearing. These actions demonstrate a flagrant disregard for fairness, due process rights, and the rule of law.
This administration's abject negligence when it comes to respecting the rights and humanity of immigrants has resulted in horrific tragedies. We've seen students brutally arrested, detained, and ripped away from their families and homes for exercising their constitutionally protected rights to free speech and expression.
We've watched in horror as immigrants are packed onto planes in the middle of the night, disappeared, and thrown into torturous prison camps in El Salvador, all in deliberate defiance of court orders. And in Wisconsin, students who have traveled all the way here simply to get an education and set themselves up for a better future are having that hard-earned opportunity stolen from them on a whim.
In the process of upending the lives of our immigrant family members, friends, classmates, co-workers, and neighbors, fundamental freedoms enshrined in our constitution, like the rights to free speech and due process, are eroding for all Americans.
An attack on the rights of one is an attack on the rights of all. We'll keep fighting in the courts, in the statehouse, and in our communities to ensure everyone, regardless of citizenship status, is treated with dignity and afforded the rights they are entitled to under the law.
