Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treats millions of cases of malaria, the world’s deadliest parasite, each year. We deliver care to communities that are most at risk, even if they are remote or hard to reach.
Right now, our response is especially needed as cases surge in Ethiopia, where 7.3 million cases were reported last year, and South Sudan, where annual outbreaks are worsening. With rainy seasons starting, rates of infection could increase even more as mosquitos breed in the water. Time is critical for our patients—it takes just 24 hours for malaria to turn severe.
In South Sudan, we’ve proven that malaria response can be effective. For two years, MSF has supported South Sudan’s Ministry of Health in administering malaria vaccinations in the village of Mayen Abun. Our mass vaccination and treatment campaign led to a 70 percent drop in malaria cases during a peak period last year.
As Dr. Mohamed Bashir, who worked on the project shared, “The success we’ve seen in Mayen Abun shows that malaria is preventable with the right tools.”
In honor of World Malaria Day, make a gift that extends the impact of MSF’s lifesaving efforts to prevent and treat malaria for millions of people around the world.
