John:
Before I share anything else, I have a confession: my parents were disappointed in me.
Like many Asian families, mine wanted me to follow a traditional path. My dad was an optometrist. He wanted me to become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, something respected. Something safe.
So what did I do at 20 years old? I ran for office, as a young out LGBTQ+ Asian American. And I lost.
But Victory Fund didn’t turn away. They lifted me up, supported me, and helped me run again. That second time? I won - and became the youngest out LGBTQ+ mayor in the country.
That’s the power of investing in LGBTQ+ leadership.
When I ran for state assembly, Victory Fund was there again. And now, nearly 20 years later, I’ve come home, to lead the very organization that helped launch my career. But I didn’t come back just to celebrate victories.
I came back because we’re under attack. This year alone, nearly 206 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in Texas. Over 500 nationwide.
They’re trying to erase us. Our books. Our history. Our humanity.
We need to fight back—and we need your help. Donate now to build a future where LGBTQ+ people can lead, serve, and thrive.
This isn’t just about elections, it’s about survival. When you give to Victory Fund, you’re helping elect LGBTQ+ leaders who will stand up, speak out, and show what’s possible.
Because representation isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifeline.
We’ve seen it in Houston, where we supported Mario Castillo—the only out LGBTQ+ member of the city council. We’ve seen it in Congress, where leaders like Julie Johnson are breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation.
But we can’t build this bench without you. So I’m asking: Will you make your mark today? Will you invest in the next wave of LGBTQ+ leadership? Donate today to ensure we keep moving forward.
Let’s raise the resources. Let’s build the bench. Let’s break more lavender ceilings. And let’s make sure no queer kid grows up thinking there’s no place for them.
We’ve got a fight on our hands. Let’s win it. Together.
In solidarity,
Evan Low
