Growth is the Prescription

What to Know: The economy is experiencing a deep recession — largely brought about by the forced economic shutdowns in response to COVID-19.

The TPPF Take: Ending the shutdowns and enacting pro-growth policies that let Americans get back to work—and back to consuming—again will ease us out of this economic crisis.

“Pro-growth policies that support improved lives and livelihoods of Americans will help us climb out of the economic despair we’re mired in,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “A key path for how to get the American economy roaring again is for states to end their shutdowns and for Congress to enact TPPF’s Workplace Recovery Act, suspend all payroll taxes, and permanently eliminate regulations suspended during the crisis."

Don’t Raise Taxes

What to Know: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is encouraging local governments to lower—not raise—taxes on their citizens.

The TPPF Take: Despite widespread private sector job losses and Great Depression-like economic conditions, public sector employment has barely taken notice.

“This summer, cash-strapped local governments will begin writing their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts in the fall,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “Most will have to contend with sharply lower revenues and elevated spending levels, the likes of which have grown fat thanks to soaring sales and property tax revenues. Local officials must cut spending if the Texas economy is to fully recover.”

They Blinded Us with Science

What to Know: A new report in City Journal says that throughout the pandemic, “political leaders have consistently relied on questionable expert guidance—and ducked responsibility for their own choices.”

The TPPF Take: Rights must take precedence over “expert guidance” and political interpretations of scientific data.

“During the early days of the pandemic, we, as a society, took collective action to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the virus. And that’s reasonable,” says TPPF’s Shelby Sterling. “But we did not agree to accept an authoritarian state indefinitely. The time has come to put away the nanny state and let our constitutional rights and liberties reclaim center stage.”
