National Review: President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, joined other world leaders on Saturday in paying respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at age 88 after a series of health complications hospitalized him for weeks. The pope’s funeral mass was held in Rome’s St. Peter’s Square, followed by a private burial at the St. Mary Major Basilica (National Review). Salem News Channel: Three days of public viewing of Pope Francis’ body by ordinary mourners and statesmen alike have ended. Francis died on Monday at age 88 after suffering a stroke. The Vatican said Friday that around 250,000 mourners filed through St. Peter’s Basilica over the three days to pay their last respects as Francis lay in state in a simple wooden coffin. Hundreds of disappointed people were turned away when authorities closed St. Peter’s Square hours before the viewing period ended (Salem News Channel).

Man Drives Into Crowd of Pedestrians During Festival Celebration Killing 11
Townhall: A 30-year-old man allegedly killed at least 11 people after driving an SUV through a crowd during the Lapu Lapu Day block party in Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday night. The incident occurred shortly after 8 pm. The event is a celebration of the Filipino community in Canada. Law enforcement arrested the suspect at the scene. Civilians had already apprehended him before police arrived (Townhall). Mario Nawfal: Witnesses described him as a young Asian male, possibly mentally impaired, though authorities haven’t confirmed a motive. The attack came during one of the city’s major cultural gatherings, honoring Filipino national hero Datu Lapu-Lapu (X). New Yorik Post: Troubling video of the aftermath showed a path of destruction littered with bodies and metal — with seemingly dozens of injured people being tended to by both first responders and civilians on an idyllic street lined with food trucks and littered with broken car parts. One EMS unit is seen desperately providing CPR to a victim while dozens of other first responders make mad dashes to aid the many wounded, that video showed. Some victims appear to be grievously wounded as they lay unaided, motionless, and bloody on the street (New York Post).

Large-Scale ICE Operation in Florida Sees Close to 800 Illegals Arrested
National Review: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement worked with Florida law enforcement to arrest nearly 800 illegal immigrants over the course of four days. The arrests came during the first four days of Operation Tidal Wave, a multi-agency immigration-enforcement crackdown that is still ongoing. Of the 780 arrests, 275 were arrested with final orders of removal, which allows them to be removed from the country in short order (National Review). Just the News: Those arrested include Jose Sanchez Reyes, a convicted murderer from Colombia, Rafael Juarex Cabrera, alleged MS-13 gang members and alleged 18th Street gang members such as Aron Isaak Morazan-Izaguirre. Milwaukee Judge Intentionally Assists Illegal Immigrant to Avoid Federal Immigration Agents
Salem News Channel: The FBI has arrested Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan, saying she “intentionally misdirected” federal immigration agents away from a man they were trying to take into custody at her courthouse. The judge’s arrest on Friday escalates a clash between the Trump administration and the judiciary over the Republican president’s sweeping immigration crackdown. The Justice Department has previously signaled it was going to crack down on local officials who thwart federal immigration efforts. Dugan appeared briefly in federal court on Friday before being released. Her next court appearance is May 15 (Salem News Channel). Margot Cleveland: Criminal complaint unsealed in case of Wisconsin judge helping illegal. It is just jaw-dropping that a judge would do this to help this character (X)! Reporter Kyle Becker: “A message has to be sent to everybody else.” Scott Jennings GOES OFF on the media for excusing Judge Dugan for breaking the law (X).

Democrats Respond to Activist Judge Being Arrested
Townhall: The FBI arrested Judge Hannah Dugan, a Wisconsin Circuit Court judge for Milwaukee County for allegedly hiding an illegal immigrant in her courthouse. It seemed that virtually every Democrats responded over social media to take issue with the arrest and make all sorts of fearmongering claims, though these were the same people who had previously insisted that “No one is above the law” when going after Republicans (Townhall). Milwaukee Democrat Rep. Ryan Clancy: We continue to stand with Judge Dugan against yet another authoritarian attempt to silence dissent, punish dissenters, and intimidate everyone else from ever joining them. Obstructing fascism is our duty, not a crime (X). Senator Amy Klobuchar: This is not normal. The Administration’s arrest of a sitting judge in Wisconsin is a drastic move that threatens the rule of law. While we don’t have all the details, this is a grave step and undermines our system of checks and balances (X).

Hennepin County Attorney Mandates Prosecutors Consider Race in Plea Deals
They are asking law enforcement officials to treat races differently. How is this not racist? HotAir: Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty recently gained notoriety for not prosecuting a Minnesota government employee for committing a series of felonies for keying Teslas. It was a travesty, one made even more blatant by the fact that her office is prosecuting a woman for causing much less damage, vandalizing one car instead of six Teslas. Moriarty is, of course, a Soros prosecutor in the mold of Chesa Boudin. And, as a Soros prosecutor, her veneration for the law is about as great as Joe Biden’s or Nancy Pelosi’s veneration for Catholic doctrine on abortion and family life. Fresh off her farcical application of the law in Dylan Adams’ case, she is implementing a policy–starting tomorrow–that requires prosecutors in her office to use race as a consideration when pursuing and resolving cases (HotAir). Kare11: A constitutional law professor warns the policy could be deemed unconstitutional if challenged in court, even if Moriarty’s office intentionally crafted the policy to avoid those legal issues… The document entitled “Negotiations Policy for Cases Involving Adult Defendants” lays out several considerations for prosecutors to take as they negotiate and offer resolutions to criminal defendants in the form of plea deals, including the race and age of the defendant (Kare11).

Massive Explosion at Iranian Port Kills 14, Injures Hundreds More
Daily Wire: A massive explosion at a strategic Iranian port killed at least 14 people and injured 750 others on Saturday, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in the coastal city that serves as a vital shipping hub for the Islamic Republic. The explosion occurred at the port of Bandar Abbas in southwestern Iran, sending a massive plume of thick gray smoke into the air, with footage showing the blast originating in what appears to be a warehouse facility. Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani indicated the explosion likely involved chemical containers, stating that they were stored in a “corner of the port that likely contained chemicals which exploded” (Daily Wire). Visgrad 24: New video shows the moment the chemical fire started in Bandar Abbas in southwestern Iran yesterday. It took just 90 seconds from the fire started to the massive explosion that killed at least 28 port workers and wounded more than 1100 people (X). BNO News: Massive explosion hits the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas (X).

California Legislators Kill Bill Allowing Property Owners to Remove Squatters
Typical California; rewarding bad behavior. Center Square: California legislators quashed a bill that would have made it easier to remove squatters and trespassers from private property. Supporters said the bill would have made it easier for property owners to remove individuals who don’t have leases without having to go into lengthy civil proceedings, while opponents say it’s already possible to remove trespassers, and would worsen homelessness…Assembly Bill 897 would have required trespassers or squatters to provide documentation of their legal entry onto the property — such as a lease or proof of rental payments — within three days, or be subject to arrest. If documentation is provided, a magistrate would hold a hearing within seven days to determine whether the documentation is properly executed or meritorious. Should the magistrate find the documentation is improper or fraudulent, the individual would be removed and subject to liability for damages and back rent based on the property’s fair market value (Center Square). California State Representative Carl DeMaio: I proposed a bill to allow removal of squatters and enforcement of evictions — but CA Democrats just killed the bill and said squatters matter more than property owners (X)!

New Yorkers Want Clean Energy, But Price Tag is Too High
Just the News: New Yorkers don’t have a problem with “green” policies aimed at expanding the use of wind, solar and other renewable energies — they just don’t want to dig deeper into their pockets to pay for it, according to a new poll. The Empire Center for Public Policy found 60% of respondents are either unwilling to pay for clean energy or would contribute only a modest amount — less than $10 per month. Meanwhile, only 3% to 5% of respondents are open to spending $200 or more each month on clean energy (Just the News).
