Public Charge policy threatens stability of American families

The Trump administration's new "public charge" rule will deny access to lawful permanent resident status for immigrants who use or may be likely to use public programs for which they are eligible that help provide necessities like food, housing, and health care. “The new public charge rule closes the door to lawful status for immigrants, punishes people for being poor and forces families to make decisions no person should have to make," said NIJC's Executive Director Mary Meg McCarthy. NIJC is banding together with organizations locally and nationally to fight against this rule and to protect families.

Government makes new money grab to fund more immigration jails

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plans to — yet again — pull massive amounts of money from certain agencies and give it to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to jail and deport more people. We oppose expansion of the immigration jail system and demand Congress release details of where DHS is taking this money from.

IN THE NEWS: NIJC's Heidi Altman commented to POLITICO in the article breaking this news: "Congress is sitting on a document explaining from where ICE took money to fuel its anti-immigrant agenda. The public deserves to see it.”

Donate to help free Gabriel!

Help Gabriel pay his bond so he can get out of immigration jail and reunite with family in the United States! Gabriel is an 18-year-old from Honduras who fled targeted gang violence because he is gay. NIJC is representing Gabriel and his family needs to raise $5,000 by Gabriel's next court hearing on September 5th, otherwise he will have to keep fighting his case while detained. Donate to Gabriel's bond fund now so he can be free!

Infographic: Untangling the knot of immigration prisons

The immigration detention system where the U.S. government locks up immigrants and refugees is intentionally difficult to understand, involving a network of government and privately-operated centers and jails spread across the country and across four different federal agencies. NIJC's new infographic and blog post explains the system.

Sign the petition: No hotels for ICE!

Sign the petition demanding U.S. hotel chains to refuse to let ICE use their properties as jails for immigrants! With increased enforcement, immigration jails are grossly overcrowded and ICE is trying to use hotels to temporarily detain immigrants. Several hotel chains have already done the right thing and cut ties with ICE. Let's keep the pressure high and force others to reject ICE too!
