Five stories to understand the week

Why it matters: About 1 out of 6 people in the world is Catholic, and the pope's recognition of the humanity of LGBTQ+ people, in a limited way, can have a profound impact on our rights and the acceptance we experience. The next pope could turn back this progress or advance it further.

Why it matters: One of Donald Trump's big promises in the campaign was for a mass deportation. LGBTQ+ people often come to the U.S. to escape homophobia and transphobia, and members of Congress need to stand up for their rights.

Why it matters: This is part of a larger push by the Trump administration to eliminate programs related to LGBTQ+ people, at a time when LGBTQ+ people are more likely to need a crisis hotline.

Why it matters: With Republicans in control of the House, Senate, and White House, federal courts remain the only avenue to protect LGBTQ+ rights, and the courts are coming through in many cases.

Why it matters: Like some other prominent Republicans, George Santos flagrantly broke the law and then claimed that the only reason people were attacking him was his political beliefs. His lack of remorse may have been what got him the maximum sentence.

And here are more good reads for this Sunday.
