A lot of people don’t know the critical role Chris Murphy played in my record-breaking 25-hour floor speech in the Senate this month. So I want to take you behind the scenes because you deserve to know what Chris did to help pull off that feat.

When I decided to attempt the marathon speech a few days earlier, I knew I couldn’t tell many people. I couldn’t let Republicans change the schedule and derail the plan, but I knew I needed someone I could trust to be my wingman — another senator I could count on to work alongside me the entire time.

Back in 2016, I was Chris Murphy’s wingman for his filibuster after the Pulse mass shooting in Orlando. As soon as I told him my plan, there was zero hesitation. He was in.

The thing about Chris is he understands the stakes of this moment and what it demands of leaders like us. He shared my belief that we need extraordinary tactics and risks to build public pressure and shine a spotlight on Donald Trump’s corruption.

So when I took the floor, he was there. He was the only Democratic senator on the floor with me for the entire night in solidarity — asking several very long and helpful questions to help preserve my voice.

When our colleagues returned the next day, he helped manage the floor for me — all the behind-the-scenes wrangling and coordination of other Democratic senators asking questions.

And in the few times when he left the floor, he led much of our media response. He did TV interviews and went on social media to force a spotlight on my effort and explain to the American people why we were undertaking such an extraordinary measure.

I’m incredibly grateful and indebted to my friend for being my wingman. He did it selflessly. He didn’t even want me to write this email to you or share all of this publicly, but you deserve to know the role he played and the kind of leader he is.

I’ve heard loud and clear from the American people that they want more from Democrats, and I can say without a doubt that few leaders have met this moment more than Chris Murphy.

He is working tirelessly to build the kind of movement we need to hold Trump and Musk accountable and stop their takeover of government. But he cannot do it alone, so I’m asking you personally to help him keep up this fight.
