Private equity firms have increased their ownership stake across health care sectors in the US.

Their focus on short-term profitability may decrease the provision of unprofitable services, reducing access for patients in vulnerable populations.

In an ahead-of-print article published this week, Yashaswini Singh and coauthors explore how the expansion of private equity-owned physician practices has led to a decrease in access for certain eye conditions such as retinal detachment.

For more on this topic, check out a recent episode of A Health Podyssey where Singh explores private equity's effect on health care staff turnover.
