Warren for Senate: [link removed]
How old
were you when you learned about the three branches of government? Checks
and balances? The separation of powers?
These are pretty basic concepts.
And they still apply to the United States government. Because we still
have a Constitution, and the president is still not a king, no matter how
much Donald Trump would love to wave a magic wand and make it so.
Look, I used to teach law, but no one needs an advanced degree to know
that when Congress passes a law, the president needs to enforce it. When
the judicial branch gives an order, the president needs to act.
But Trump seems to hope that if he bluffs hard enough — if he pretends
he’s already got supreme authority — we’ll all bow down to him.
Come on now.
I will keep fighting back as Trump claims powers he simply does not have,
including trying to pull funding for programs and agencies Congress has
mandated through law. In the courts, in Congress, and through grassroots
organizing, we can continue to build strong opposition against this
corrupt administration.
And we have to push back whenever anyone tries to legitimize Trump’s
attempted power grabs.
Here’s an example: last week, I went on CNBC, where we started talking
about Trump’s dumb trade war. I laid out my plan — which the Senate will
have to vote on, through something called a "privileged motion" — to undo
Trump’s “emergency” authority to play his red-light-green-light game with
tariffs.
One of the CNBC hosts claimed that Congressional action “ultimately
doesn’t matter” because Trump “has the authority ultimately.”
Excuse me? Of course the law matters — it’s the law. Trump wouldn’t have
his “emergency” trade war authority if Congress decided to take it away.
I kept explaining how it’s Congress’ job to write the laws and decide
which money goes where. How it’s the president’s job to enforce those laws
and spend that money where the law tells them. And how if the president
fails to do that, the courts step in and enforce the law.
We can’t let this narrative take hold that Trump can just do anything he
wants, with no one around to check his authority.
We have to push back with everything we’ve got, every chance we get.

of law, and keep our government accountable not just to the rich and
powerful but to all families. If you’re able to pitch in a donation to
help keep that fight going strong, it would go a long way at this pivotal
moment.
