As the war in Sudan enters its third year, millions of people remain unseen—bombed, besieged, displaced, and deprived of basic needs.
This month, we marked two years of war in Sudan—a war that has spawned the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with no end in sight. Since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, more than 13 million people have been forced to flee their homes, Sudan’s health system has been pushed to the point of collapse, and humanitarian assistance has been blocked. Sixty percent of Sudan's 50 million people are now in need of humanitarian assistance, but the aid available is nowhere near meeting the massive and escalating needs.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is helping people in Sudan and neighboring Chad and South Sudan, where hundreds of thousands have fled. Our teams are vaccinating children, screening for and treating malnutrition, caring for influxes of war-wounded patients, and more. But repeated obstruction of aid and attacks on health facilities and medical personnel are making it difficult to reach people who need help.
“The warring parties are not only failing to protect civilians—they are actively compounding their suffering,” said Claire San Filippo, MSF emergency coordinator. “Wherever you look in Sudan, you will find needs—overwhelming, urgent, and unmet.”
