Championing equal access for refugees in Jordan

Jordan has historically welcomed refugees escaping violence, persecution, and other dangers in their home countries. But that changed in 2019, when the government effectively suspended registration for asylum seekers. That has created major hardships for newer arrivals who now have fewer job opportunities and limited access to health care, education, and other services. Today, AFSC is supporting refugee communities in Jordan to advocate for protections and equal treatment in their host country. Read more.

AFSC joins Vanguard S.O.S. campaign for fossil fuel divestment 

Last week, AFSC announced its endorsement of the Vanguard S.O.S. campaign. Vanguard is the world’s largest investor in fossil fuels, holding $444 billion in coal, oil, and gas companies. Through the campaign, AFSC is working with Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT) and other partners to pressure Vanguard to shift its investment strategy away from fossil fuels and to incorporate climate considerations into its decisions. Vanguard “must bring an end to the financing of big polluters which endanger our environment and human well-being,” says AFSC’s Brett Heinz. Read more.

All people should have access to healthy food, housing, and the resources they need to thrive. But government safety net programs have long fallen short of what's needed. As we advocate for programs to support human needs, we can also take direct action in our own communities. By forming mutual aid networks, we can help each other right now while continuing to push for policies that meet everyone's needs. Read more.
