Friend,
Earlier this week, the Trump administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) abruptly terminated many Community Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) grants and funding. This decision undermines years of bipartisan work and progress in communities across the country that have borne the brunt of gun violence.
Brady is working in close collaboration with and taking guidance from our CVI partners — led by Community Justice (CJ), Cities United, and The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) — to better understand and evaluate the full scope and impact of these cuts.
This is a difficult time for many of our partners and allies whose work has been integral to preventing violence, saving lives, and promoting healing in Black and Brown communities. We are committed to supporting those who have been impacted, exploring all avenues, including policy, advocacy, communications, and legal support. We will follow the lead of these organizations and aid in convening others in the movement as we organize, strategize, and defend this essential, evidence-based life-saving work.
We know that community violence intervention strategies work — multiple cities have seen a 30-50% reduction in violence because of investment attributed to the scaling of CVI strategies.
We cannot let this rollback of community violence intervention funding happen quietly. Please help us demand the reinstatement of CVI funding and continued investment in community-centered solutions to gun violence by getting loud on social media. |
In solidarity, Team Brady |

Another Shooting. Another NRA Convention |
Just one week after the shooting at Florida State University that claimed two lives and injured six more, the NRA held its annual convention in Atlanta, GA. This three-day event features exhibits like the “Wall of Guns” and a banquet auction filled with “food, firearms, and fundraising.” It’s a stark and deeply unsettling contrast to the grief and fear communities across the country are feeling in the wake of yet another school shooting. Watching the gun industry and its top lobbyists push their “guns everywhere” agenda while opposing efforts to protect our communities from gun violence is offensive, but unfortunately, not surprising.
For decades, the NRA has been one of the most powerful lobbying groups in Washington. But its grip is slipping. Last year, Wayne LaPierre, once the head of the NRA, resigned ahead of a civil trial that found he had misused millions of donor dollars for private jets, luxury vacations, yacht rentals, and more. In turn, NRA membership plummeted, and this year, for the first time, high-profile speakers like President Trump are not attending the convention.
Brady has fought relentlessly against the NRA and to expose the big lie that guns make us safer. But as the NRA flounders, other gun groups continue to push the same deadly agenda, putting gun industry profits ahead of our safety and ahead of human lives.
To learn more about the NRA, its annual conference, and the rise of other gun industry titans, read Brady President Kris Brown’s newest piece, “The Convention Goes On. So Do Shootings." |
