Each year, malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people. Africa bears the greatest burden with 95 percent of malaria deaths occurring in the continent—children under five years old represent 78 percent of these deaths. This is, however, an avoidable tragedy.

Malaria is preventable and treatable. That’s why Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) response to malaria is so critical. Around the world, our teams reach and treat millions of people, improve prevention in partnership with community health workers, and prepare for malaria seasons.

Three facts to mark World Malaria Day:One child dies of malaria every two minutes on average—our response involves preventing malaria and reaching children in the most affected regions. We have 24 hours to treat malaria before the disease turns severe. That’s why MSF teams stay ready to respond and mobilize quickly. In 2023, we treated more than 3.7 million cases of malaria, in some of the most at-risk, hard-to-reach parts of the world.

Malaria is one of the most common diseases MSF treats, but there are many challenges that affect our ability to deliver malaria care to those who need it the most: People in remote, insecure areas with little or no health care access. Amid obstacles, see how MSF teams are responding to malaria and ensuring that people receive care.

Our strategy is multifaceted—we use mobile clinics to reach remote areas, partner with community health workers, deliver supplies, and spread awareness about prevention.
