Dear John,

I understand that being black in America comes with real challenges, dangers, and fears that white America will never experience. That's an indisputable fact. We must confront systemic racism within our society, from overt acts to covert behaviors, to the lingering oppression in our government and foundational institutions. What we’ve witnessed in the last few weeks is evidence of a long history of inattention and inaction to upend existing structures.

It’s not enough to just say Black Lives Matter, we need to act now to eliminate discrimination caused by an unjust system. Much of this work requires action by various levels and branches of government, including our state government. I’m committed to rallying other elected officials to effect change, but I need your help.

Governor Abbott needs to host a special session to address police brutality and criminal justice reform in our state.
