Your generosity has helped so many people find freedom and safety, including Alice, a brave Ugandan woman pictured above with her children, whose abusive partner beat her so badly she was hospitalized. You helped her get the care she needed and provided her with legal assistance to ensure her abuser helped pay for child support.
Right now, lockdowns across the world are causing this violence to increase, and thousands of vulnerable women just like Alice are trapped in their homes with abusive partners, family members and caretakers.
Children are at higher risk, too. The Uganda Child Helpline received nearly 900 calls in March, and on one day in April received over 700 calls. Local authorities have been completely overwhelmed by the spike in domestic violence reports, and many police resources were diverted to enforce general public safety guidelines, making it difficult to adequately respond to domestic violence reports as they came in.
But with your help, IJM teams are now delivering supplies to set up temporary shelters for women and children fleeing domestic violence in Uganda. We are also providing transportation to local police so they can begin timely investigations in cases of domestic and sexual violence.
John, it wouldn’t be possible to respond to this rise in domestic violence without the generosity of people just like you. By giving to support our most urgent needs, you can help protect more vulnerable women like Alice across the world.
