More than 40 million people in this country have lost their jobs since the COVID-19 crisis started, putting us in a historic unemployment mess. While it was right for Congress to take action with the CARES Act, those initial benefits will come to an end very soon - even though there is no end in sight for the people who are out of work.

If there was ever a time for the government to step up and support people, this is it.

Instead, trickle-downers like Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are threatening to force businesses and people to return to work before public health experts say the country is ready. This is shortsighted and will only deepen and prolong the economic depression while letting coronavirus run rampant through the country - ultimately costing more lives.

We think there is a clear solution: Passing the HEROES Act, which allocates $3 trillion in funding for states, small businesses, and people. This bill extends unemployment insurance and other vital public benefits, sends cash to people who need it most, and extends a lifeline for small businesses.

The reality is simple: We need to learn to live in a COVID world until we have a vaccine. Until that day comes, we need the government to take immediate, impactful, and inclusive action. No other organization has the power to adequately support those in need.
