South Carolina resolved a major issue that prevented thousands of 17-year-olds from pre-registering to vote. Meanwhile, Indiana passed a law banning student IDs as valid voter identification. And on the national level, the SAVE Act — a bill that could prevent millions of Americans from casting their ballots — is headed to the Senate.

😃 THE GOOD: In South Carolina, the state's Department of Motor Vehicles has corrected a system glitch that previously prevented 17-year-olds — who would be 18 by Election Day — from registering to vote when applying for a driver's license. This issue previously excluded more than 17,000 eligible teens from the voter registration process.

With the fix now in place, the DMV will forward registration information for applicants ages 16 and older to the State Election Commission. This ensures that those who will be 18 by Election Day are registered, and information for those not yet eligible will be saved for future registration. This change not only resolves previous legal challenges but also marks a step forward in empowering young voters and upholding voting rights in the state.

😠 THE BAD: In Indiana, Governor Mike Braun signed Senate Bill 10 into law, prohibiting college students from using their university-issued student IDs as valid identification for voting.
This law targets college students who may not possess other forms of ID, and could prevent them from casting their ballot. The law is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, ahead of the upcoming election cycle.

😡 THE UGLY: The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which now heads to the Senate for consideration. The bill would require individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship — such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization certificate — when registering to vote in federal elections. If enacted, the law would severely restrict voter registration, harming young voters, communities of color, women, and people in rural areas.
