for CCL 2020
Our country is grappling with big issues this year: a global pandemic, and putting Americans back to work. Confronting our legacy of injustice. Navigating a big election. Although this time is painful and challenging, we see hope in the huge numbers of Americans making their voices heard in our democracy. This weekend, our conference will focus on climate change. But throughout the conference, you’ll find many connections to the other issues of the day, such as:
- “Thinking Forward on Race and America,” with John Wood Jr. from the organization Braver Angels, which works on depolarizing American politics
- “Navigating Business Outreach in the Time of COVID,” with CCL’s National Outreach and Partnerships Coordinator Taylor Krause and members of the Business Climate Leaders action team
- “How COVID and Carbon Pricing Affect Coal Communities,” with Brandon Dennison from Coalfield Development
The conference will also feature keynote remarks from Rachel Kyte of Tufts University, who formerly served as special representative of the U.N. secretary-general for Sustainable Energy for All and as World Bank Group vice president and special envoy for climate change. She has a message of encouragement and determination in the face of all the challenges we’re dealing with right now.
Other news this week: Bipartisan ag bill introduced to help climate: Sen. Mike Braun, co-chair of the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus, has teamed up with Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) to introduce the Growing Climate Solutions Act, a bill focused on agriculture and climate change. CCL announced support for the legislation last week. You can express your appreciation to Braun and the other sponsors by replying to his tweet about the bill. |

Media: 6th grade CCLer gets on radio
She just turned 12, but Aili (pronounced eye-lee) Scott has already accomplished a lot with the North Tahoe CCL chapter. She came to Washington (shown above with mom Megan Scott) and lobbied her members of Congress last year, organized her school’s climate strike last fall, and wrote an op-ed for her local newspaper. Last month Aili did a half-hour interview on her local station, Truckee Tahoe Radio. In the course of her interview, she talked about the Energy Innovation Act and lobbying Congress (CCL stuff starts about 20 minutes in). Something tells us we’ll be hearing more from Aili in the future. CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever like these volunteers did, watch or read this training on Preparing for Media Interviews.

This week on the CCL blog
Climate town hall with Utah congressman: Volunteers in CCL’s Wasatch Back chapter recently held a virtual town hall meeting on climate change with Rep. John Curtis (R-UT), shown in center above with CCL members, and several local mayors. The event drew about 100 participants from across the political spectrum and resulted in a productive conversation about how we might solve climate change. Read more.
