Hi John,
These have been incredibly challenging times in America, to say the least. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated our communities and our economy, the brutal murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor have painfully shown us the severe inequities rooted in our criminal justice and police systems. We must do better.
The rallies I attended this weekend (pic below) make me hopeful. All around the country, our neighborhoods have been filled with Americans from all walks of life fighting for a better tomorrow. We channel our common pain into common purpose.
To address systemic inequities, let’s demand that we strengthen our infrastructure and create foundations for opportunity and success for all Americans. Let’s invest in public education, public housing, and public health resources, in addition to the reforms that are needed to make our policing more just. Urgently, let’s raise awareness of the roles of systemic racism and implicit bias in our society.
This week, the Democrats in Congress put forth a sweeping, long-overdue police reform bill. You can count on me not only to be a Yea vote for this legislation, but also to lead the push to address the painful inequities that permeate our society.
My opponent, Lee Zeldin, on the other hand, has used his platform to vilify “rioters and looters,” claiming that the only way to move forward as a nation is to reelect President Donald Trump, who decided to use pepper spray and tear gas on peaceful protestors. These men are trying to tear our country apart, trying to bring out the worst in us.
We must, and will, defeat Trump, Zeldin, and their allies this Fall, but right now is a time for action and urgency. So today, I am asking you to join me in supporting critical organizations working to enact the much needed changes in our society.
One that I am personally supporting is Color of Change ([link removed]), whose mission is to “end practices that unfairly hold Black people back, and champion solutions that move us all forward.” You can support their work by donating online at [link removed]
In solidarity,
Nancy
