John:
The recent decision by the Department of Justice to terminate Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) awards is more than a policy shift — it’s a devastating blow to the communities working every day to build safety and heal from harm.
Adzi Vokhiwa, our Vice President of Policy at Community Justice, issued the following statement in response:
“The administration’s termination of CVI funding awards is a blow to the communities most in need of safety and investment. Community violence intervention strategies interrupt cycles of violence — they save lives, restore communities, and build pathways to long-term safety and opportunity. Cutting critical funding to these programs undermines decades of community-led work and places countless lives at risk. Public safety can only be achieved when our community is equipped with the resources they need to engage, de-escalate, and build trust where traditional systems have failed. Community Justice stands in solidarity with every organization, advocate, and family impacted by this decision.”
We remain committed to the power of community-led safety solutions and the work of every partner and advocate in this movement. Now more than ever, we must protect, uplift, and invest in the strategies that work — especially those rooted in lived experience, healing, and long-term change.
As part of that commitment, we also encourage you to explore the CVIPI Rapid Response Toolkit — developed alongside Cities United and The HAVI — to support real-time responses in moments of crisis.

We’ll continue to push for equitable investments in public safety — and we stand ready to work alongside all those who refuse to let this setback silence the solutions our communities deserve.
In solidarity,
José Alfaro, Executive Director
