** Ending the annihilation of journalism in Gaza
------------------------------------------------------------
After a year and a half of war, nearly 200 Palestinian journalists have been killed by the Israeli army, including at least 43 slain on the job. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has brought multiple complaints ([link removed]) before the International Criminal Court (ICC) and continues to tirelessly support Gazan journalists, working to halt the extraordinary bloodshed and the media blackout imposed on the strip. Now, RSF has launched a petition ([link removed]) demanding an end to the massacre and that the territory be opened to foreign press.

** “Journalists are being targeted and then slandered after their deaths. I have never before seen a war in which, when a journalist is killed, you are told they are really a terrorist,” stated Thibaut Bruttin, Director General of RSF, during a recent RSF demonstration ([link removed]) in solidarity with Gazan journalists.

RSF scored a new win ([link removed]) in its legal battle against the Trump administration. After the NGO and a coalition from the international broadcaster Voice of America (VOA) filed a lawsuit ([link removed]) challenging the outlet’s dismantling, a judge ordered the defendants to reinstate VOA’s employees and contractors and restore its programming. The order must now be implemented.

** Want to fight climate change? Then protect environmental journalists
------------------------------------------------------------
Nearly thirty journalists covering environmental issues have been killed in the past decade. On Earth Day — 22 April — Reporters Without Borders (RSF) sounded the alarm ([link removed]) over the growing violence targeting media professionals who report on these critical issues. RSF calls on the world's nations to strengthen their protections for environmental journalists to ensure the production of reliable news — we cannot fight climate change without it.
** The M23 tightens its grip on the news in the Democratic Republic of Congo
------------------------------------------------------------
In the Kivu provinces occupied by the M23 rebels, the armed group has issued a set of directives aimed at controlling the press, including a ban on negatively reporting on the M23. As the security situation deteriorates ([link removed]) , many journalists are fleeing the area. RSF is actively supporting Congolese reporters targeted for their work, assisting them with emergency relocation and safety measures.
** Questions on the press’ sustainability surround Canadian elections
------------------------------------------------------------
On 28 April, Canada will hold parliamentary elections. Between the unlawful arrests of journalists, threats to public broadcast funding and barriers to accessing government data, Canada’s politicians have work to do ([link removed]) if they want their country to keep its place in the top tier of the RSF World Press Freedom Index — and become a global leader in press freedom.
“Radio has always been a crucial lifeline for people in Myanmar, especially with the junta imposing internet shutdowns. RFA’s radio programs have reached even the most remote areas during the most difficult times. Now, with the country reeling from a massive earthquake while under a coup, access to reliable information has never been more critical. Removing such an important news outlet during a disaster like this is not just an attack on press freedom, it's a matter of life and death. People need to know where to find safety, where help is, and how to protect themselves — and RFA has been a vital source of that information.”

** Ukraine’s Radio Svoboda another victim of the Trump administration’s policies
------------------------------------------------------------
Radio Svoboda, the Ukrainian branch of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), has been forced to halt multiple programmes, becoming the latest casualty ([link removed]) in a wave of blows to the Ukrainian media following US President Donald Trump’s decision to dismantle the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The iconic outlet is one of the few reliable sources reporting from occupied Ukrainian territories — where Kremlin propaganda proliferates — and produces vital investigations on Russian war crimes and corruption.
What if tech giants boosted reliable journalism?
RSF and over 190 media outlets worldwide — including Agence France Presse (AFP) and Radio Taiwan International (RTI) — have signed an open letter ([link removed]) calling on the tech giants behind the online platforms to recognise journalism as an essential public good and take concrete steps to promote reliable information by integrating the Journalism Trust Initiative ([link removed]) (JTI), an international professional standard, into their algorithms.

Two hundred and eighty Nicaraguan journalists have gone into exile since 2018 and many of the country’s news outlets have shuttered, yet Nicaraguan newsrooms continue to operate in exile from their host countries. A new report ([link removed]) by the JX Fund — a support fund for exiled journalists created by RSF together with the Rudolf Augstein and Schöpflin foundations — highlights these outlets’ crucial role in keeping the public informed despite the repression of the Ortega-Murillo regime.
