Dear John,
From the bottom of our hearts: Thank You :)
A couple weeks ago, many of us took the time to give our best input on where the Avaaz movement should go next. We’ve been reading through thousands and thousands of comments from members like you - some even out loud in our team meetings. And here’s what we’ve learned: No matter where we are in the world right now, we are unbelievably united! For example, 92% of us are excited for Avaaz to work on stopping the rise of fascism , and the same number want us to focus on defending human rights . Many noted the extreme urgency of the deepening climate crisis – and so we’re doubling down on remaking humanity’s relationship with this beautiful planet that is our home.
We’ve heard your voice –here are our priorities for the year ahead:
It wasn’t just the numbers that touched us — it was the wisdom in your words.
Because after our campaigns team had been through the responses, a beautiful truth rang clear:our community wants to approach the challenges of our time not just with courage, but with compassion and nuance. As one of you beautifully put it:
“Instead of portraying those drawn to fascism as ‘monsters,’ we should ask why they are attracted to it—what wounds lie beneath? A movement that seeks to understand this will be more effective.”
Because of your insights, we are changing the way we communicate to adopt a less polarising tone, even as we meet the threat of far-right authoritarianism head on. We hope, from the bottom of our hearts, that the work we do together in the months ahead is worthy of this amazing community.
With this poll, we also learnedmore about the people standing alongside us as Avaaz members.
Here is who we are: We’re millions of human beings spread across 186 countries , speaking at least 18 different languages! Isn’t it kind of magical that we share many values, hopes and dreams with people on the other side of this wild and beautiful planet?
Here’s something else – we take care of others: educators and healthcare workers are some of the most common professions among those who responded to this survey. 70% of us — myself included — are parents, and 22% proudly wear the title of grandparent. (Which, let’s be honest, comes with better snacks and fewer tantrums.)
And get this —over 40,000 people who answered the survey are over 70! It is inspiring that so many of our elders are working to build a better world for themselves and leave a good legacy for the young ones who follow.❤️
The big takeaway was this: even though it doesn’t always feel like it,t here are millions of people everywhere across this giant, messy, wonderful world who are breathing in rhythm , sharing hopes, dreams, and willingness to stand up together and defend what we love.
As the writer Clarissa Pinkola Estés once said:“It does not take ‘everyone on Earth’ to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.”
Let’s remember that on the hard days.
With resolve, tenderness, and a beautiful sense of community,
Nana, Nell, Patri, Chris, Bia, Sarah, Pascal, Bert — and all of us at Avaaz 💛
