When it’s possible, we hide the brutality and injustice of the world from children as a way to protect them. Kids don’t like it when they find out later, but when these same children become adults — generation after generation — the pattern, for the most part, holds.
It makes sense to protect young children. As humans, it’s one of our most natural instincts. We chase away monsters and threats, real or imagined, so that our children can sleep at night. Perhaps we also do it so that we can sleep at night.
But here is a fact for those of us who care about decency, democracy, and a better future for all people: the monsters are real. They are living and they are breathing and they are villainous.
They are now inside the house — and it’s not like the first time. The cruelty is now paired with a vicious efficiency, and the damage they are unleashing will not be easily undone or repaired. That’s a fact.
So we don’t spare you this reality. We know you know it too. But here is the message: now is the time to fight like we have never fought before.
