John,

This week, responding to massive protests around the country—and the world—calling on policymakers to defund police, Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders took a knee in Congress while wearing a West African fabric traditionally reserved for royalty.

Just like Pelosi ripping up Trump’s State of the Union speech or holding up a Bible and quoting from the Book of Ecclesiastes, it’s simply theater.

Behind the scenes, Pelosi, in a leaked 2015 memo, warned congressional candidates, “Don’t offer support for Black Lives Matter policy positions,” adding ominously, “This document should not be emailed or handed to anyone outside of the building.”

Can you support our effort to replace Pelosi with a candidate who’s consistently supported the movement for black lives—as well as its policy demands?

Despite her recent rhetoric, Pelosi remains the same policymaker who helped build the system of mass incarceration whose abuses have driven millions of Americans into our streets.

She specifically said in recent days that she does not support defunding the police to promote alternatives to violence and incarceration—as the City of Minneapolis has already voted to do.

Rather than support the policy demands of movement activists, what Pelosi offered instead is a mishmash of police “reform” policies, including more studies and a disturbing expansion of police surveillance.

We have news for Pelosi: the time for studies passed a long time ago.

What we need is to embrace the movement’s demands for transformative policies, as we did in our campaign’s visionary criminal justice reform platform, which includes measures to make it easier to hold police accountable for their abuses, to promote alternatives to incarceration, and to defund the police.

Millions of Americans in the streets have demanded that. The Minneapolis City Council hears them. Why doesn’t Pelosi?

If you’re done waiting for her to hear, can you contribute today to help make defunding and demilitarizing the police a reality?

With their powerful, conservative unions and ties to for-profit private prisons, police wield massive political influence, even beyond their effective legal authority to abuse—and even kill—innocent people with impunity.

Together, we can end qualified immunity to hold cops accountable for their violence, and shift federal budgets from counter-productive security programs to where our resources can make the biggest difference: in our schools, in restorative justice programs, and in our communities.
