It is 2020, and women still make an average of $0.81 to every dollar a man makes.
We’ve only closed the pay gap by seven cents since 2015, and for women of color, the wage gap is even steeper.
In 2018, Black women made an average of $0.62 for every dollar a white man made, and Latinx women made an average of $0.54.
This is unacceptable.
Today, on the anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, we’re demanding that Congress put in place new laws that ensure women, especially women of color, get paid equally -- and we need you to add your name and ensure your voice is heard.
When we’re talking cents on the dollar, this may not seem like a large amount -- but over the course of a lifetime, those numbers add up. Depending on race, a woman can lose between just over half a million dollars and over a million dollars in wages over a 40-year time period.
What does this mean for our economy? It’s clear that women are an integral part of the workforce. Not paying them equally contributes to the steep wage gap women experience every day in this country.
Everyone deserves equal pay for equal work. Period. In order to work towards building a fairer economy for everyone, we must start by resolving the gender pay gap, especially for women of color.
