 CHAMPION MESSAGE

"... any call to action will be empty if it does not move us to individual responsibility. We all have a role to play in moving our country forward, in ensuring that our democracy delivers not just for those who have but also for those who seek and for those in need."

- Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Former United States Secretary of State

Follow the Science: Riots Don’t Work

On his nightly soapbox, CNN’s Chris Cuomo requested, “Please, show me where it says protesters are supposed to be polite and peaceful.” Of course, you won’t find these instructions written in the protester’s handbook anywhere, but they are reflected in common sense and a new study. The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that “protest behaviors perceived to be harmful to others, highly disruptive, or both—typically reduce support for social movements.” Worse, researchers found that highly disruptive and extreme behavior at protests backfires, increasing support for the opposite cause.

The Paycheck Protection Program Gets a Revival

President Trump signed the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act of 2020 into law last week. This bill modifies the Paycheck Protection Program to ease the pressure on small businesses to use the borrowed funds in time. May Jobs Report Is Looking Up

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics just released the newest jobs report. Shocking economists, traders, and investors expectations, the U.S. economy added 2.5 million jobs in May. According to the report, the unemployment rate fell from 14.7% to 13.3%. This is significantly better than the 19.2% forecasted unemployment rate for May. This report is encouraging news. Such a turnaround in only a month suggests that maybe the economic regrowth will happen faster than expected.

Are Social Workers the Answer?

"Abolish the Police,” protesters chant. What does that mean? One widely tweeted answer: “Almost every role in our community a police officer fills would be better handled by a social worker.” Yet consider an area in which social workers already tend to be the ones who enforce the law. Child-protection agencies routinely send social workers to respond to reports of abuse or neglect. These workers have little or no training in investigation.

Protests and Looting Are an Insult to America’s Healthcare Workers

Watching the destruction of property, livelihoods, and businesses across the U.S. devastates every American. The murder of George Floyd is an egregious crime. The actions of the callous officer who extinguished his life are an insult to all decent American police. But this is simply not the time for large gatherings. As doctors and healthcare professionals who have worked hard to stem the destruction of the pandemic, it is heartbreaking to watch the flouting of public health measures and blatant disregard of social distancing.
