John — Billionaire Trump crony Elon Musk says he's worried that "civilization is going to crumble" if people don’t start having more children.
And yet, at the same time, his very own so-called Department of Government Efficiency ("DOGE") is laying off staff and slashing funds from programs designed to protect American mothers and children.
Does this hypocrisy sound familiar? Elon Musk may be new to Republican politics, but this playbook is well-used. It mirrors what we’ve seen from pro-natalist, anti-abortion groups for decades — and from the GOP’s own Project 2025.
Here is just some of the so-called "inefficiency" Elon's DOGE and others in the Administration have cut so far:
- Suspended more than $27 million in grants to women's health centers
- Cancelled $1.6 million in funding for maternal and postpartum care at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA
- Cut programs that help people compare IVF clinics, monitor safety in fertility and make sense of health data
- Eliminated the team in the Division of Reproductive Health working on federal guidelines for the safe use of contraceptives — guidelines critical to safe pregnancies for women with diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus, and multiple sclerosis
These are not the actions of someone who cares about the American people. These are the actions of someone who wants control — over women’s bodies, our financial choices, and our fundamental freedoms.
Changing the face of power — by replacing billionaire-backed, anti-choice Republicans with Democratic pro-choce women — is possible.
