Yesterday afternoon, I saw a headline that made my heart skip a beat:
Unfortunately, Business Insider’s headline seems to overstate the truth. Musk’s remarks came during a call with investors in Tesla, whose stock price made Musk the richest man on Earth. Tesla’s car sales are down dramatically, while Musk has been the face of the Trump administration’s plot to destroy Social Security. Musk seems to have been telling investors what they want to hear to prop up his own personal wealth.
Don’t be fooled: Musk will still be pulling the strings, even if he’s not giving incriminating quotes as often. And the Musk-Trump agenda of destroying Social Security remains. Musk and Trump have fired thousands of the employees who made sure Social Security’s benefits have been paid in full and on time for nearly a century. Offices are still slated to close. Nothing has changed the trajectory that led former Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley to warn that Social Security could miss payments within months.
With Elon Musk taking a step back, we need to keep pushing to reverse the cuts Musk and Trump have already made to Social Security! Rush a donation today!
Even as we remain vigilant, we should recognize that this shows that our campaign is working. Elon Musk came into the Trump White House triumphant, and proceeded to squander the public’s trust by recklessly smashing pieces of the government, and publicly fixating on wrecking our Social Security system.
Social Security Works and our members have made Musk’s fixation on Social Security the defining issue of DOGE. But that doesn’t mean the fight is over.
Musk has installed lower-profile yes-men throughout the government. These yes-men are loyal to Elon Musk’s mission of privatization and destruction, not the missions of the agencies they are destroying. And unlike Elon Musk, they won’t have the press amplifying their every utterance. This is in some ways an even more dangerous phase for our fight to protect our earned benefits!
