Tell FCC Chairman Carr: Leave Journalists Alone [[link removed]

Friend,

In a late-night social-media rant on April 13, Trump called on FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to strip CBS of its broadcast license. This is far from the first time that the president has asked a public servant to violate the Constitution and serve his interests instead.

In this case, Trump’s anger came in response to a 60 Minutes interview with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy that rightly blamed Russian President Putin for starting the war. Trump ordered Carr to “impose the maximum fines and punishment” for a segment that offered something other than White House propaganda.

While the FCC has the authority to issue and deny broadcast licenses, it historically has not intervened in editorial decisions, for First Amendment reasons. But under Carr, the agency is taking action against news organizations Trump dislikes.

This is the same Brendan Carr who was caught last week sporting a gold-plated lapel pin of Trump’s face.

Please sign our petition today to remind Carr that he serves the U.S. Constitution and the people of this country, not the vindictive whims of a TV-obsessed president. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

To FCC Commissioners:

While the FCC has the authority to issue and deny broadcast licenses, it rightfully abstains — on First Amendment grounds — from dictating broadcast outlets’ editorial decisions. You must honor your oath of office and reject President Trump’s unconstitutional call on the FCC to strip CBS of its licenses.

The FCC must cease this pattern of flagrant attacks on the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.
-----------------------

Earlier this year, Carr launched a baseless investigation into alleged “news distortion” by CBS1 for a different 60 Minutes interview (that time with former Vice President Kamala Harris). In fact, we already delivered more than 13,000 of your signatures to the FCC in opposition to this abuse of power: This isn’t our first time fighting Trump and Carr’s attacks on freedom of the press — and it won’t be our last.

The FCC should never be in the business of intimidating journalists and censoring reporting that holds the president or any other powerful figure accountable. Add your name if you’re with us. *One click on the link or button will instantly add your name to our petition if we have your details on file.*

Thanks for your support,

Tim and the rest of us at Free Press
