Dear All,
As COVID-19 continues to be an issue of major concern to our community and has impacted many of us personally, we wanted to let you know what the Officers of the Broward Democratic Party are doing to request information and action from the Broward County Commission as the County's re-opening plans continue to move forward. Last week, we sent the attached letter to Mayor Holness, Vice Mayor Geller, all Commissioners, and the County Administrator, requesting detailed information be made public related to the County's capacity for contact tracing, antibody testing results, and the diagnostic accuracy of tests being used. We also requested detailed plans to address access to testing in communities already facing inequitable access to healthcare, a public health education campaign related to safe practices that prevent transmission, and information on the metrics the Commission is using to determine if the County should resume its stay at home order.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the Plantation Democratic Club, whose work inspired this letter; credit for the opening sentences belongs to them. They also inspired our recent op-ed in the Sun Sentinel. We are grateful to be part of a community that challenges us to think outside of the box during these unprecedented times.
We understand the economic pain this pandemic has brought to many of our doorsteps, and the urgency with which members of our Broward community wish to re-open. Our goal in writing this letter was to request action and information from the County Commission that will help to ensure our community stays safe and informed as the phases of re-opening continue to roll out. As we wrote in our op-ed, an effective response to a global pandemic should be apolitical, and we will continue to hold all of our elected officials accountable.
