John,
We can’t believe we have to say it, but there’s no “maybe” in the Constitution — no American president can serve three terms.
However, you’ve probably heard President Donald Trump suggest multiple times — jokingly or not — that he should be allowed to run for a third term. He’s floated it in interviews, hinted at it in rallies, and encouraged supporters to imagine a permanent presidency.
Alarm bells are going off in our heads when we hear this. The United States has long honored a simple and powerful democratic tradition: A president can only serve two terms. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution makes this the law of the land.
Members of Congress — no matter their party — should be speaking out against this. That’s why we’re calling on them to publicly stand up against this clear affront to the Constitution. Will you sign our petition to show your support? We want to show Congress that Americans across the country want them to do so!
Our democracy is getting tested right now and that’s why we at Issue One are working hard to defend the Constitution and ensuring our nation’s norms are upheld.
In solidarity, The Issue One Team
