Team,
In Georgia and across the country, far-right election deniers are using an insidious tool to try to reshape the electorate: mass voter purges.
Here’s how this voter suppression tactic can work:
A single right-wing activist — with guidance from a systematic anti-voter network — can submit official challenges to specific people’s voter registrations. In Georgia, Republican voter suppression legislation — passed after Trump’s 2020 loss — has allowed one person to try to purge an unlimited number of their fellow Georgians from the rolls.
In those attempts, private citizens can use flawed, incomplete data — as shown by an analysis we commissioned last year — to claim that certain voters are no longer eligible.
After a purge attempt, people need to jump through additional hoops to maintain their registrations. If elections officials sign off on the purge, those Americans could no longer be able to vote. And even if that doesn’t happen, the effort still forces officials to waste valuable time and serves as voter intimidation.
We fight back against mass voter purges to defend the freedom to vote — fuel this fight with a donation today.
The threat isn’t hypothetical — just look at this headline from ProPublica investigating the consequences of new Georgia legislation that paved the way for more mass voter purges:
“Close to 100,000 Voter Registrations Were Challenged in Georgia — Almost All by Just Six Right-Wing Activists”
According to ProPublica, “Five of the six most prolific challengers…have assisted or been assisted by right-wing organizations, some leaders of which were involved in efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election.”
Since then, Georgia GOP lawmakers pushed through a new law which has made mass voter purges even easier.
This voter intimidation and suppression tool has a long history in Georgia going back to Reconstruction and carrying through to Jim Crow. We’re fighting back to protect the freedom to vote.
At Fair Fight, we’ve exposed the anti-voter intentions behind mass purge attempts by spreading detailed information about how right-wing activists base their allegations on unreliable data.
And our dedicated volunteers have systematically monitored potential mass voter purges across Georgia — uncovering attempts to disenfranchise thousands of voters, submitting open records requests to document and challenge voter suppression efforts, and resulting in a comprehensive list of purge attempts that played a key role in pushing back against this tactic throughout 2024.
But as mass voter purges gain speed in other states like Michigan, Texas, and Pennsylvania, we must redouble our efforts to ensure that people maintain access to the ballot box and preserve their power in our democracy.
Your grassroots support helps make it possible to mobilize more volunteers and help more voters stay on the rolls despite baseless purge attempts. Rush a donation of $30 or any amount today to fight back against MAGA voter suppression and protect our democracy.
