John,
In the 2024 presidential election, the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, spent $278 million to elect right-wing candidates who share his vision of lower taxes for billionaires and fewer corporate regulations that protect workers, consumers, and the environment. The vast majority of this $278 million went to elect Donald Trump, including Musk handing $1 million checks to Trump voters―literally buying votes.
Since no court and no government agency stepped in to stop Musk from buying votes, he hasn’t stopped. In this month’s recent Wisconsin Supreme Court election, Musk continued handing out $1 million checks to voters, in this case in an attempt to elect a far-right judge. Musk and his political groups spent over $20 million in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, making it the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history.[1]
Buying votes is supposed to be illegal. But so far, no court and no government agency has held Musk accountable.
Now, Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund is joining with our allies in demanding the Federal Election Commission investigate Musk’s election bribery. Add your name to demand the FEC act.
According to an Americans for Tax Fairness report, just 100 billionaire families spent a record-breaking $2.6 billion to influence the 2024 elections―and that’s not including dark money donations that don’t get reported.
Saurav Ghosh, director of campaign finance reform at the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center, recently told CNN:
“The moment that we’re in is the logical and unfortunate result of the culture of how elections are financed in this country that was unleashed by the Supreme Court in the Citizens United decision.”
Unlimited spending by billionaires―including literally buying votes―cannot be part of a democracy of, by, and for the people. Add your name now and demand the FEC investigate Elon Musk’s election bribery.
Together, we’re shining a spotlight on billionaires buying elections, demanding Congress and the FEC return our democracy to the people.
Thank you for taking action today,
David Kass
