Right now, there are people held at Rikers Island caged in tiny showers, sleeping on excrement-smeared floors, and they are being subjected to dangerously inhumane environments that will impact their mental health and wellness for years to come. 

 

These are our fellow human beings—and they are being treated without respect, decency, or dignity.

Rikers has a long-standing history of dangerous conditions for incarcerated individuals and staff, marked by frequent violence, insufficient health care, and persistent overcrowding.

 

More corrections officers won’t help. More police won’t end it. More people locked up won’t stop these disgusting and persistent human rights abuses.
