Dear Health Advocates,
Congress is still out on recess until next Monday, April 28, but that doesn't mean the work stops.
This week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Kennedy v. Braidwood case, which challenges the Affordable Care Act's requirement that health plans should provide preventive services free of cost-sharing. The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is an expert body that rates and recommends preventive services, which plans must cover at no cost. How the Supreme Court rules, along with how the Secretary of HHS makes decisions over the USPSTF following the ruling, will determine if millions of patients lose their access to free preventative health care. (See more from the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.)
Turning to Congress, this final week of recess is CRUCIAL in our advocacy efforts to protect and defend Medicaid from these potentially disastrous cuts. Thank you for all of your advocacy efforts during week 1! May 7 has been set as the target date for committees to finish their markups, with the House Energy and Commerce Committee potentially meeting as early as May 5 to begin its work. Speaker Johnson's goal remains to move forward with reconciliation by Memorial Day.
Families USA and our partners have a few ways for you to be active during this recess period to tell your members: No cuts to Medicaid! -
