Every April, we celebrate Earth Day by honoring the beauty and power of our planet. Today, people across the world are asking a vital question: How can we do better by the Earth?
Any answer to this question would be incomplete without acknowledging the fact that if we want to do right by this Earth, we must do better by the beings who we share this planet with .
Environmental sustainability isn’t just about protecting land, water, and air. It’s also about protecting those who live within them. Because the Earth isn’t just a landscape—it’s a home. One that holds every footprint, every struggle, every story. Not just ours.
Elephants who mourn their dead. Whales who call to family across oceans. Chimpanzees who comfort one another in times of grief. These beings experience joy, grief, connection, and pain—and yet they remain invisible in the eyes of the law.
At the Nonhuman Rights Project, we’re working to change that.
