The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over.
With states beginning to re-open, we’re already seeing a spike of infections. Fourteen states just hit their highest seven-day average of new cases since the start of June — and experts are still warning of a second wave in the fall.
It has been months and nurses are still putting our lives on the line treating COVID-19 patients without the proper protections. The House passed the HEROES Act, which includes the two key provisions required to protect nurses. We must demand the same from the Senate now. Nurses cannot wait.
Registered nurse and NNU Executive Director, Bonnie Castillo, is testifying remotely today in Congress before the House Oversight and Reform Committee. But it will take many voices speaking out to get nurses the protection we need.
The more of us who get infected, the more our patients’ lives are at risk — the more we’re ALL at risk. We’re launching a massive petition to the Senate to demand the critical protections we need once and for all. We need to show a huge outpouring of support from nurses, from other frontline workers, and from all those who support us, to get these protections passed into law.
These necessary protections include passing an emergency temporary OSHA standard and mandating the President use the Defense Production Act to begin mass production of the PPE we so desperately need. The HEROES Act passed by the House includes these provisions, and the Senate must follow suit today.
We cannot let up now. Congress has yet to provide any funding towards PPE for nurses and other health care workers on the front lines. Meanwhile, state and local law enforcement have been appropriated $850 million for overtime, PPE, supplies, and training.
In solidarity,
National Nurses United
