Earth Week is a time for both reflection and action — and a reminder that protecting our environment takes year-round commitment. Across King County, we’re working with communities to create a healthier, more resilient, more sustainable future for all.

We’re partnering with Rainier Avenue Radio for a week of free, all-ages environmental programming April 21-26.

One year later: King County’s largest-ever floodplain restoration project is improving salmon health
Restored habitat is helping young salmon
Young Chinook salmon are growing considerably well in the restored habitats of King County’s largest-ever floodplain restoration project.
In a first-of-its-kind King County study, our research team tracked salmon growth and diet in the restored floodplain along the Snoqualmie River. The results? Some fish gained over half their body weight in just six weeks — evidence that our approach is working and a strong signal for future restoration efforts.
Our ecologists found that the 145-acre Fall City Floodplain Restoration Project is promoting healthy salmon growth and providing abundant food resources. The project also reduced flood risks for nearby farms, homes, and roads, applying the principles of Snoqualmie Fish, Farm, and Flood to deliver multiple community and environmental benefits.

Major sewer upgrade project is the first of its kind to earn Salmon-Safe certification
Our major sewer upgrade in Bellevue is the first wastewater infrastructure project in the nation to earn Salmon-Safe certification. We’re simultaneously modernizing infrastructure for a growing population, improving habitat for salmon in the Coal Creek Natural Area, and increasing access to a popular urban trail.
