Happy Earth Day, John!
This Earth Day, we’re planting seeds of action — because real power grows from the ground up. When we nurture our care for the planet, we grow something stronger together. From fighting climate change to building community gardens, from clean energy to clean streets — every seed we plant matters. And in 2025, one of the most powerful actions you can take is at the ballot box, electing officials who care about the future of our communities. See who they are and what they can do below.
🌱 City council members
- Allocate city budgets to create and maintain more green spaces, like parks and community gardens.
- Incentivize sustainable public transportation, like electric city buses and bike-sharing programs.
- Create local tax credits for solar energy.
Voters will decide more than 30,000 city council seats in 2025.
🌱 Mayors
- Invest in buildings that use renewable energy, like solar panels and natural water heating.
- Manage water treatment and waste management systems in ways that are less damaging to the environment.
- Set citywide goals to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
Voters in more than 5,000 cities will choose a mayor in 2025.
🌱 Judges
- Uphold or strike down laws that impact the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live on.
- Prevent polluters from targeting vulnerable communities.
- Limit or expand government control over environmental protections.
Voters will determine more than 1,000 judicial seats in 2025.
🌱 Governors
- Create statewide climate protection plans, like Michigan’s 2023 Clean Energy & Jobs Act and the California Climate Commitment.
- Join the bipartisan U.S. Climate Alliance of 24 governors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the country.
- Set aside land for conservation to protect critical ecosystems.
Voters in New Jersey and Virginia will elect a governor in 2025.
