Gov. Whitmer Announces Funding to Bring 90 New Jobs, Cutting-Edge Medicine to Detroit with BAMF Health Facility
LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board support for a new health facility from Grand Rapids-based BAMF Health, a leader in diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s since 2018. The project is expected to create up to 90 new jobs and generate at least $93,756,533 in total capital investment for Wayne County.
“BAMF Health’s investment in Detroit will bring good-paying jobs and millions in economic growth to Wayne County,” said Governor Whitmer. “BAMF’s new facility will help them better serve Michigan patients. It will reinforce Michigan’s reputation as a leader in health care and the best place to pioneer cutting-edge technology that not only grow our economy but makes peoples’ lives better. Let’s keep working together to build a healthier, more prosperous future for all Michiganders.”
BAMF Health will create a new comprehensive Theranostics Center and Radiopharmacy in Downtown Detroit, which will provide direct personal medical services to patients receiving treatment for diseases such as cancer. The project includes the establishment of a molecular imaging clinic, a molecular therapy clinic, and a commercial manufacturing radiopharmacy.
“Michigan is proud to stand at the forefront of innovation in the fight against cancer and other diseases,” said Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II. “The new Theranostics Center and Radiopharmacy in Detroit strengthens our state's commitment to innovating and making a difference. By investing in cutting-edge science and empowering our brightest minds, we are creating opportunities that will transform and save lives, both in our communities and across the globe.”
The project is being supported by MSF Board through a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant and approval of a 15-year 100% SESA Exemption with an estimated value of up to $982,000 for its $45,000,000 eligible investment in Eligible Personal Property.
The site for the Theranostics Center and Radiopharmacy is Bedrock’s 14-acre Gratiot Site campus, with the facility expected to reside within the Gratiot Site’s Life Science Innovation Building and occupy 45,000 square feet on the first floor. The facility will be equipped with unique medical and pharmaceutical production machinery including MRI machines, PET/CT scanners, hot cells and cyclotrons, increasing care access to Michigan patients as well as residents from across the country.
“Today’s MSF approval of BAMF Health’s new facility in Detroit will build on Michigan’s leadership in cutting-edge health science, helping us deliver on the state’s ‘Make It in Michigan’ economic development strategy of supporting People, Places, and Projects,” said Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Chair of the MSF Board. “I’m grateful to Governor Whitmer, our bipartisan partners in the state legislature, and the volunteer MSF Board for their ongoing support of the Michigan Business Development Program grant tool. Congratulations to BAMF Health on their growth to Southeast Michigan where additional care will benefit the lives of more Michiganders.”
The project will result in the creation of at least 90 new jobs; starting wages include $35 per hour for business operations specialists, $42 per hour for nuclear medicine technologists, $55 per hour for electronics engineers and upwards for physicians and surgeons. All the positions pay at or above the Regional Median Wage of $23.73 per hour, with the exception of five entry-level positions that pay between $20 and $21 per hour.
“We are grateful for the continued support of Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Strategic Fund and their shared commitment to making our state a national leader in precision medicine through novel radiopharmaceuticals,” said Anthony Chang, PhD, founder and CEO of BAMF Health. This site not only enables us to deliver life-saving care to patients in southeast Michigan, it also serves as a gateway for patients across the country to access the most advanced imaging and treatments. Our work at the Gratiot Site is poised to drive innovation in healthcare technology.”
This investment from BAMF Health will stimulate growth, attract investment and contribute to Michigan’s leadership in research and development, positioning the state as a global leader in theranostics and radiopharmaceutical development and manufacturing. Thanks to BAMF Health’s efforts in the clinical trial space, its new facility will increase opportunities to partner with large pharmaceutical companies on new drug development and testing.
The project approved by the MSF Board aligns with the state’s Make It in Michigan economic development strategy of supporting People, Places, and Projects across the state by growing BAMF Health’s Michigan footprint and improving the health of Michiganders.
“The arrival of BAMF Health’s innovative Theranostics Center in downtown Detroit is akin to planting a seed in already fertile ground. This project will grow the city’s burgeoning medical ecosystem and bring next-generation cancer therapies to Detroiters,” said Kevin Johnson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. “The DEGC proudly supported BAMF during our 2.5-year attraction effort alongside the MEDC. We are grateful to the MSF Board for their support of this transformative development.”
“Ensuring Michiganders have access to the medical centers they need is important for any community, and it is especially critical for someone facing a health hardship,” said State Representative Joe Tate (D-Detroit). “The creation of this new theranostics center and radiopharmacy in Downtown Detroit would provide lifesaving care to those battling medical challenges like cancer. I applaud the commitment to our community and the relief this center will bring for many Detroiters.”
