Dear Friends,
In these stormy times, we are keeping the New Deal beacon alight. Drastic cuts to federal agencies are causing incalculable harm to the nation’s libraries and museums, history and civics education and vital programs that got their start during the New Deal, such as Social Security, federal emergency aid and school lunches.

At the General Services Administration (GSA) more than half the staff of the Fine Arts and Historic Preservation Office have been laid off, putting America’s collection of public art—including thousands of New Deal artworks and public buildings—at risk. We are responding to this threat through the network of art historians, curators and educators we’ve developed under our Advocating for New Deal Art initiative.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has also been hard hit. The NEH has enabled American creativity to flourish by supporting nonprofits dedicated to history, philosophy, art, media and language. Now it has cancelled most of its grants without cause, including the Living New Deal’s hard-won $150,000 grant to upgrade our unique database of 19,000 New Deal projects and present our findings to the public in new and better ways.

An unnamed Living New Deal donor has pledged a matching grant of $75,000 in hopes of spurring other Living New Deal supporters to make up for the lost NEH grant funds. We dearly hope that loyal friends, like you, will rise to this timely challenge!

We are redoubling our social media outreach to alert the public about the ongoing dangers to the New Deal’s legacy. Please spread the word and contact your representatives to oppose the attacks on America’s history, arts and culture.
