Washington, DC | www.mpac.org | – April 21, 2025 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) calls on the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office to immediately and unequivocally hold accountable Edan On, one of the individuals responsible for violently assaulting pro-Palestinian protesters at UCLA on April 30, 2024. Despite explicit and irrefutable video evidence clearly showing 18-year-old On viciously attacking peaceful demonstrators with a pole, actions resulting in severe injuries to multiple individuals, the former Los Angeles County District Attorney unjustifiably declined felony charges, shifting responsibility to the City Attorney’s Office for misdemeanor consideration.
The actions of On and others involved in the attack were far more egregious than mere accusations of trespassing on campus, resulting in serious bodily harm and lasting trauma. Measured by the equal hand of the law, such an assault warrants felony charges and should never have been relegated to misdemeanor consideration by the City Attorney.
The inaction of the City Attorney’s Office sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the safety, free speech, and civil liberties of students advocating for human rights and justice. We remind the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office of their obligation to ensure that those responsible for such egregious acts of violence are brought to justice swiftly and decisively. It is a travesty of justice that one year later the statute of limitations is set to expire on April 30 and the perpetrators have not been held accountable.
MPAC demands that the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office immediately file charges against Edan On and anyone else who was arrested for attacking students to demonstrate that violence against peaceful protest will not be tolerated. Failure to do so sends a message that aggression and intimidation can prevail unchecked, setting a harmful example for our community and beyond.
