Last week we sent you a list of actions to start enacting real systemic change in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and the victims of police violence. We asked you to press Congress to reject “qualified immunity”, vote NO on inadequate Police Commission nominees in San Francisco, and to lift the curfew in San Francisco.
We also saw many of you at protests all through the week. And, our members helped at two protests with our friends at Wealth and Disparities in the Black Community - Justice 4 Woods.
And it’s already working. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far in our community.
- San Francisco curfew was lifted by Mayor Breed after an influx of opposition to the measure, including calls to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors by ISF members.
- Nancy Tung’s nomination to the Police Commission failed at the Board of Supervisors. Tung is a law-and-order conservative who did not denounce the SFPD shooting of Mario Woods. The vote was 10:1 - only Catherine Stefani voted yes.
- Geoffrey Gordon-Creed withdrew himself from nomination to the Police Commission. Gordon Creed was not a qualified candidate to the commission and we had asked the Board of Supervisors to reject his nomination.
- Mayor London Breed has vowed to decrease funding to the SFPD, and will redirect those resources to the Black community. (Now we need to make sure she follows through!)
- California’s State Legislature stalled AB2261, which would have expanded the use of facial recognition surveillance. ISF members made calls in opposition to AB2261.
- Our Members of Congress have introduced and supported a Justice in Policing bill in the House which will hold police across the nation accountable.
We can’t stop now. We have to continue pushing until we achieve real systemic change. With that in mind, we have more actions for you to take this week.
TODAY at 5:30pm: Call into the Police Commission and tell them to Defund SFPD!
The San Francisco Police Commission will potentially vote on whether or not to approve the next SFPD budget (FY 20-21). We need to tell them to defund SFPD, so those resources can be used for other important programs in San Francisco.

The Police Commission will begin at 5:30pm. You can view the commission meeting on cable television on San Francisco Cable Channel 26, or online at www.sfgovtv.org.
You will need to call in to the meeting via phone to leave a public comment. Public comment will occur at the END of the Police Commission meeting. This can mean a few hours after the meeting has begun.

TODAY: Tell your Assemblymembers to vote YES on ACA 5!
The Assembly is voting TODAY, Wednesday, June 10 on ACA 5. If passed, this bill would place a repeal of the 1996 anti-affirmative action prop 209 on the November ballot. We are asking our members to call their Assemblymembers to pass this bill.
Call your Assemblymember and tell him: Vote YES on ACA 5.
Tell your Members of Congress: Hold hearings on police violence and the Trump administration’s abuses!
While we appreciate our representatives’ efforts to craft bills addressing systemic problems in America, including systemic racism and police violence, we understand that these bills have little chance of passing the Senate. We want our representatives to use their Democratic majority in the House as leverage where it really means something.
With this in mind, we are asking our Members of Congress to hold hearings to investigate acts of police brutality. We also want them to investigate abuses within the Department of Defense and Department of Justice that led to peaceful protesters being tear-gassed outside the White House. Finally, we want them to hold hearings on the distribution of aid for COVID-19.
Contact your Members of Congress and demand that they enact more oversight over police and the Trump administration.
