Friend — This is Big Brother in action.
The Trump administration is already deporting legal US residents, some of them permanent residents, for exercising their first amendment right to speak out against the genocide in Gaza.
Now, the Department of Homeland Security has announced that they will be monitoring the social media accounts of non-citizen residents to track their statements about Israel and Palestine.
And we know from the deportation of Mamoud Khlail and other activists that any speech that is critical of Israel’s military actions and/or supportive of Palestinian liberation and self-determination will be used as a grounds for arrest and deportation.
Friend — Ilhan Omar has always spoken out against Israel’s apartheid, settler violence in the West Bank, and the destruction of Gaza. But this is about even more than that.
This is about Trump using the federal government to monitor legal residents, put a chilling effect on free speech, and enforce their far-right position on Israel and Palestine. It’s a warning to anyone who is not a full citizen that they can be scooped up by ICE and deported at any time over a tweet or Facebook post.
And if they can do this over the issue of Israel and Palestine, they can do this over anything. It’s the same lawless thinking behind accusing people of being “gang members” without evidence and sending them off to a prison camp in El Salvador. It’s fascism, and it must be stopped.
Ilhan is continuing to do everything she can as a member of Congress to hold this administration accountable and build our grassroots opposition. But she’s going to need the help of everyone reading this to keep up the fight.
