Dear Friend,
Ten years ago, on April 19, 2015, Baltimore was shaken by the death of Freddie Gray—a 25-year-old Black man whose death was ruled a homicide after he suffered fatal spinal injuries while in police custody. Arrested without cause and subjected to a “rough ride” in the back of a police van, Freddie’s killing sparked a movement, both in the streets and in the hearts of communities across Maryland, demanding an end to police violence and real accountability in our justice system.
And yet, a decade later, we are still fighting for justice. The officers involved were never held accountable. They were allowed to move on with their lives, while Freddie Gray never got that chance. His family is still living with the pain, and our community is still grieving the loss. This week, we remember Freddie. We remember the uprising. And we remember the power of people demanding better. At Progressive Maryland, we remain committed to that demand—for real justice, for transformative reform, and for a public safety system that actually serves our communities instead of harming them. Read on for important updates from our issue campaigns and news you can use.

QUICK ACTIONS: Across Maryland, families are still being torn apart by a broken immigration system—and Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia’s story is one we can’t ignore. Kilmar is a father, union worker, and valued member of our community who was illegally deported by ICE despite a standing court order. Now, he’s imprisoned in El Salvador while his wife and three children remain in Maryland. It’s time to bring him home. Sign CASA’s petition now. |

Healthcare Task Force: Campaign Updates, Maryland and Nationwide
FIRST OF ALL, thanks to Sen. Van Hollen for speaking out, leading, and taking action to stop everything that Trump and Musk are doing to destroy democracy, human rights, free speech, and the rule of law. We support his campaign to bring Kilmar home. When it comes to healthcare, his advocacy for the federal employees who serve in essential healthcare agencies and programs is helping to save jobs and support Marylanders across the state.
# Hands Off Medicaid Campaign: We’re part of the all out national effort to stop the plan to strip away health care for seniors living in nursing homes, people with disabilities, children, and parents and families who are struggling financially and can’t afford to get health care services without some assistance. Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to force the House vote to cut $880 billion from Medicaid in order to give a trillion dollars in tax cuts to people who don’t need help: the ultra rich and big corporations.
We say Hell No! If you live in the First Congressional District, tell Rep. Andy Harris #NoCutstoMedicaid and #NoTaxCutsforBillionaires. Johnson is trying to fast track this plan; Harris needs to hear from his district. Click here to SEND AN EMAIL NOW The time is NOW to organize against the attacks on all of our people and our values. Shore Progress: Derby Day Picket for Ocean Downs Workers
Shore Progress is showing up strong for workers this Derby Day. Join them in standing with Ocean Downs Casino employees—specifically the Table Games Dealers—who are organizing for fair pay, job security, and dignity at work.
Over 100 workers have already unionized under a labor peace agreement, but Churchill Downs (which runs the casino) is refusing to honor the same process for all staff. Instead, they’ve resorted to threats and intimidation. These workers deserve better.
Be part of the action on Saturday, May 3 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM at 10218 Racetrack Rd, Berlin, MD. Let’s show up in solidarity and demand justice on the job.

News You Can Use: State and Fed-level struggles continue on deportations, fund cutoffs and other probably illegal Trump behavior
Courts in Maryland, Richmond and the capital continue to struggle with the outlandish stances of Trump and his minions -- on immigration/deportation and ICE's increasingly gestapo-ish role;on funding cutoffs used for bullying behavior modification, on slashing the federal workforce and erecting tariff-barriers that will never in our lifetimes bring offshored factories back to US soil, on deliberate efforts to add ever more carbon to the planet's air. And more. And Pope Francis, an anchor of decency regardless of faith or its absence, made it to Easter but not beyond. Feeling left behind? Solidarity is required, more than ever, as we look at a worse-than-usual week of News You Can Use.
