[link removed] [[link removed]] Dear Friend,
Last week, I held a Community Impact Hearing with three fellow State Attorneys General. We heard from Coloradans harmed by the lawless actions of the Trump Administration. It was powerful.
One moving story came from Marya Washburn, a U.S. Forest Service employee. As reported [[link removed]] , Marya “was part of a firefighting team that responded to the Alexander Mountain Fire in Colorado last summer. In February, she was among the 3,400 probationary employees at the agency to be illegally fired by the Trump Administration, and although she was reinstated thanks to a court order, that order is set to end on Saturday.”
I went to court to get her reinstated and will continue to stay on the case, protecting federal employees who are treated illegally.
Marya’s testimony [[link removed]] silenced the room: “I’m shaking,” she said as she read from her notes, sharing her emotion about cuts to firefighting personnel ahead of the 2025 fire season. “I’m angry.” You can listen to her powerful words–and the whole session– here. [[link removed]]
Marya called out Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins–who oversees the Forest Service–for her lies about protecting the agency. Instead, as Marya explained, Rollins cut the Forest Service by 35%, severely undermining Colorado’s ability to fight wildfires. That same Agriculture Secretary has also sought to cut critical food security programs, a concern raised by Patience Kabwasa, who runs Food to Power, a remarkable community-based organization in Colorado Springs.
I am committed to listening and acting. I am now in court fighting the Agriculture Secretary’s illegal cuts to personnel and programs.
In the face of threats posed by the Trump Administration, some suggest we need to “pick our battles” or “wait for the right pitch.” I don’t see it that way. I stand on this principle: when the Trump Administration violates the law and hurts Coloradans, my duty is to fight back. We cannot yield to the bullying, harmful, and illegal acts of this Administration.
For more on why defending our core American principles is so critical right now, please take a look or listen to this interview with Princeton President Chris Eisgruber. [[link removed]] Chris taught me Constitutional Law. He is a mentor to me. And he has refused to back down in the face of this Administration’s threats and bullying.
What I told Marya and Patience and others at the Impact Hearing applies to all of us: fear is contagious. And so is courage.
Their courage to speak out matters. That’s true for all of us. I promise you this. I will stand with you as we show up and fight for our Constitution and our values. We cannot appease or enable. We cannot back down. We cannot be silent.
