Defunding Common Sense

What to Know: There’s a growing movement on the left to defund the police.

The TPPF Take: Better policing through defunding is illogical on its face. This fast-growing movement has quickly outpaced the logic and common sense questions that could slow it down.

“Budget cuts decrease the ability of a police agency to train its officers and hamper its ability to attract quality recruits,” says TPPF’s Randy Petersen. “Furthermore, it will reduce its ability to use innovative programs to improve public safety and public relations.”

A Supreme Win

What to Know: The Texas Supreme Court has let a lower court’s decision on Austin’s unconstitutional paid sick leave ordinance stand.

The TPPF Take: The city of Austin’s attempt to mandate paid sick leave for private sector workers is clearly preempted by state law.

“Once again, Texas courts are unanimous that cities in Texas lack the lawful power to mandate paid sick leave that interferes with the ability of employers and employees to negotiate wages and benefits,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “This denial by the Texas Supreme Court is a clear signal that cities across Texas should withdraw these unconstitutional ordinances.”

Bail Reform

What to Know: While bail reform is needed, New York’s approach to bail does not provide a model for Texas and other states because it precludes consideration of public safety, discourages the use of risk assessment and fails to provide resources for pretrial supervision.

The TPPF Take: Bail reform measures must preserve both due process and public safety.

“Policymakers should prescribe the type of bail reform that both enhances public safety and protects individual liberty,” says TPPF’s Marc Levin. “Just as in health care, pretrial decisions must be individualized and guided by objective evidence.”
