Most Mondays, I write about a series of events that unfolded since Friday, hoping to weave them into a coherent narrative. Today, however, I need to focus on one major story from the weekend: a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to block — temporarily, at least — the administration from sending another group of migrants to a notorious prison in El Salvador.

At this point, the contours of the case are depressingly familiar. Late last week, there were strong indications that Donald Trump’s cronies were preparing to send another planeload of Venezuelan migrants to the infamous CECOT prison without due process.

On Thursday, lawyers for the migrants filed emergency motions in several federal courts, seeking to block the transfer. In response, the Department of Justice played its familiar game of cat and mouse with the migrants, their counsel and the courts.
