Earth Day is almost here, and while we'd love to celebrate, we can't ignore what's at stake.
The climate crisis is here, and it’s hitting our communities harder than ever. In late 2023, Hurricane Hilary brought catastrophic and deadly flooding, destructive mudslides and hazardous winds across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. Death Valley National Park experienced its longest closure ever — two months — due to extensive road damage caused by this record-breaking storm.

And at the same time, our most cherished public lands are under threat of being sold off for short-term profit. These lands are where so many people make lifelong memories, hiking, playing, and communing with nature. Many are also crucial in protecting us against catastrophic climate change, as bogs and forests are incredible carbon sinks.
Safeguarding our future and preserving these unique landscapes are at the heart of our mission and this fight. Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument are visited by millions annually, a testament to their irreplaceable beauty.

But the State of Utah is currently challenging the designations of both Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in court. Utah leaders have repeatedly said their goal is to present their case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which would place the fate of tens of thousands of archeological sites, Native American sacred sites, and recreational lands in jeopardy.

• | | Advancing legislation at the state and local level that protects federal lands. |
• | | Pushing lawmakers in DC to uphold the Antiquities Act, which has been used to protect some of our most important cultural, natural, and historical sites. |
• | | Working harder than ever on projects that expand access to the outdoors for every person, regardless of zip code. |
• | | Investing in local climate solutions that protect communities from rising temperatures and extreme weather. |

P.S. We do our best not to ask for donations from members who just made a gift, but sometimes our records don't update fast enough to keep recent donors from receiving an appeal like this. So, if you did just give, thank you for your support, and our apologies for the extra email!
